Apple Kuchen

From the kitchen of “Grandma (Esther) Pabst”, Bob’s mother, from Aunt Margie (Esther’s sister in law)

You are going to love this custard covered apple dessert. It is light enough on the sweetener and so cozy and comforting. Kuchen is the german word for cake, a coffee cake or even a pastry, enjoyed with coffee.

As I followed the recipe, I found that my batter came together similar to a pie crust texture, but more pliable. I was able to press it into my baking dish, just up to the edges. Deanna said her mixture was more on the crumbly side, possibly due to the gluten free flour mix she used, but it still worked great for the recipe.

Next we placed our sliced apples over the dough. We found that using around 3 medium apples was just right. Sprinkle with as much cinnamon and sugar as you want (maybe even sneak in some ground ginger), and pour the egg and milk mixture over everything. It will look like milk soup surrounding the apples. But it firms up perfectly in the oven.

I could definitely see enjoying this tart like dessert for breakfast with coffee. Satisfying and simple.
