Appetizer?

crushed pretzel breadsticks

This was a fun one to try because it was so outside the norm of something I might try on my own. I imagine gramma saw this or read it in a magazine and jotted it down. This was found in a stack of recipes that she wrote down near the 1980s but it was loose and could be more recent than that. I just like to think of gramma getting inspired by an idea like this - “Oh that would be good” and jotting it down for later.

The simple note of “Yummy” in the middle of the recipe card leads me to believe that she tried them - either she made them and added that note in or she had them at someone’s house and wrote it down for future reference.

I can confirm that these snacks are indeed yummy and the use of pre-made frozen bread dough or frozen pizza dough is never-ending.

bacon wrapped breadsticks

To elaborate on the process: I bought pizza dough from the freezer section at my local grocery store. I thawed it and rolled it out so I could cut it into strips. Roll it as wide as you want these sticks to be long and cut it with kitchen shears.

I brushed an egg white and mustard wash over some and covered them with crushed pretzel bits. I couldn’t find can fried onions at the store so I improvised and seasoned the wash with onion powder and garlic powder.

With the other set, I wrapped them in bacon. My bacon was thick cut so it took longer to bake and it was a little tricky to wrap the bacon around the sticky dough but —- they were tasty. Both versions of this breadstick snack or “appetizer?” were a crowd pleaser.
